The Phenomenon: Park Hyo Shin

There was a ticketing war online on April 18 to get tickets for a singer’s concert. Tickets for the first round (about 45,000 seats) that started at 8 p.m. on the same day ran out with the start of the reservation, and one reservation site saw its server go down as more than 600,000 people flocked to the site.

The main character of the concert was singer Park Hyo-shin (38). He will hold six performances at Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium in Songpa-gu, Seoul, for three weeks from June 29. The concert will be held for the first time in three years since 2016. The second round of reservation (about 45,000 seats) was held on the 2nd, and the ticketing fever was also great. “There are more than 550,000 people accessing the concert (even in the second booking)” said artist’s agency Glove Entertainment. “This concert will be the largest concert ever for a solo artist in the history of the Gymnastics Stadium.”

Even in the music market, Park Hyo-shin’s influence is strong. The new song “Goodbye,” which was released on Thursday, swept almost all music charts. It has pushed out all of the group BTS’ “Poetry for the Small Things,” band Jannabi’s “For the Juggling Lovers” and girl group TWICE’s “Fancy,” which had previously competed for the top spot.

Some in and outside the K-pop industry say that Park Hyo-shin’s popularity has many notable points. He began his career in 1999 when he was a high school student by releasing a debut album with “Things I can not do for you” and rarely appeared on the air except for music programs. However, he has been a top singer for 20 years. He released his sixth album in 2010 and joined the military, but his popularity has not waned. The 2014 singles “Wild flower” and “Happy Together” were a series of hits, showing off their strong performance, while the seventh album released in 2016 showed a number of tracks simultaneously gaining popularity.

So, what is the secret of Park Hyo Shin’s popularity? The reason for this is that he has excellent singing ability. What’s unique is that his style of singing has slowly changed over the past 20 years. At one point, he gained popularity for his “sourcing method,” in which he captures excess emotions with his husky voice. But not now he’s making a fresh appearance in a clear, gentle, yet appealing voice.

Singer Lee Jeok once said on a radio show in the past citing “Wild flower” in which changes Park Hyo Shin’s singing style began to be evident. If a home run hitter changes his batting form, he or she will not be able to hit a home run, but he may be able to change his batting form and hit more homeruns”.

It is also noteworthy that Jung Jae-il, a producer who is known as a genius musician in the music industry, has been working together steadily since 2014 and presenting high-quality works. The two also appeared together on the music program “Your Song” (JTBC).

“This is a rare example of Park Hyo Shin firmly building his image as a vocalist through concert-oriented activities”, said Kang Tae-kyu, a music critic.

“I feel like I’ve been very good at managing images,” singer said. “Since I’m making my own musical history while writing my own songs, I will continue to feel more confident towards him among fans.”
