BEHIND STORY of PHANTOM

Mysterious things happened before the birth of musical <Phantom>. In 1983, the next year after Playwright Arthur Kopit and composer Maury Yeston received Tony awards, they were offered a proposal that to make a musical out of the novel <The phantom of the Opera> from director and actor Geoffrey Holder. At that time, Geoffrey Holder had rights to make the novel into musical so Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston started to work with the offer. However when they were working on musical numbers after they finished the book, Magazine ‘Variety’ introduced an official interview with Andrew Lloyd Webber that he is planning to produce musical <The phantom of the opera> in London,  and musical <Phantom> started to falter. Even in this disaster, investments were made and putting the musical on stage became quite certain. But after 2 years when <The phantom of the opera> in Broadway became a  huge success, investors and producers didn’t want <Phantom> to be produced because they created from the same novel. Investors started to hands off from the production and it was obvious it came to frustration. But two creator(Kopit and Yeston) decided to wait for their time. After couple of years Arthur Kopit succeeded with NBC drama <Hands of a Stranger> and adapted <Phantom> in mini series. The mini series with the Opera Garnier setting and grand opera music was a huge success and investors lined up because of it’s quality. Finally at Theater under the Stars, Huston,USA, 1991 musical <Phantom> was premiered. <Phantom>’s fresh access to the original novel and its differentiated story with majestic Operetta music moved the audience. Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston said “Our waiting was worthy and we were perfectly ready.”
